Sacred Earth. Sacred Soul

John Philip Newell is a Celtic teacher and author who speaks and writes about the sacredness of Earth and every human being. He spoke at Knox last May. Lawrie Carter reviews one of his books, Sacred Earth. Sacred Soul:

I bought this book when John Phillip Newell was at Knox last spring with the Irish Festival. I had been familiar with Celtic spirituality and was sceptical that I would find very much new in this book. But I was favourably surprised. Celtic spirituality has never been given as complete a description of its origins and history as Newell does here. He also highlights the key characters through history who have kept the tradition alive, extending right back into the second century, starting with Iraneus and Pelagius, and extending right up into the 20th Century with Teilhard de Chardin.

Anyone who has responded to the language of Celtic prayer and wants to know the lineage of Celtic spirituality relative to our spirituality in the western church of our birth should find this book insightful and encouraging.
