This Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. We begin our journey as we await the birth of Christ, the amazing gift of the incarnation.
The very first Advent Carol in my home church was always “Oh come, Oh come Emmanuel”. I have vivid memories from my childhood of the choir processing into the sanctuary, singing this stirring song and knowing that a new season was beginning.
Advent (the four weeks before Christmas) begins the New Year in the Christian calendar. It is a season of expectantly waiting and preparing our hearts with the weekly themes of hope, peace, joy and love. Advent comes from the Latin word meaning “he is coming”.
This Sunday, t wo young girls from our LOGOS grades 1-3 will be lighting the first Advent candle – the candle of Hope.
Grades 4-6 LOGOS Worship Arts will be playing the tone chimes and music scholar Jakob Villeneuve will sing “If with all your hearts” by Felix Mendelssohn.
We will also be celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The trees and wreaths are up and decorated and our nativity scene is set up outside the church.
Come and celebrate the beginning of Advent. We travel through Advent as forgiven people, lifting our faces towards the light. Let us walk together in hope and in faith.
